You are watching: Who Are Avengers 5’s 60 Returning Characters? Predicting The Record-Breaking MCU Cast
After what feels like an extended period of quiet on Avengers 5, recent updates have suggested a director is close, and most interestingly, that more than 60 characters could return. That would make the upcoming crossover event the MCU’s biggest project – and likely the most expensive – by some distance. Inevitably, concerns about balancing that many characters were immediately raised, but it would be foolish to ignore the cool factor here.
The question now is who those characters are, so let’s work it out. The original report mentioned characters returning, so I’m limiting the potential appearances here only to MCU characters who have appeared already or are definitely appearing very soon. That means that speculation that the likes of Ghost Rider will appear in some form is acknowledged but left out.
While initial reports suggested “more than 60” characters could return, laying out all the possibilities actually paints a picture of an even more colossal figure. In actual fact, with all the active characters in the MCU when Avengers 5 releases, we could be talking about three figures.

Avengers 5’s Most Likely New Avengers Team
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Will Have a New Line-Up
Close
Starting with the MCU’s core team, it’s possible to predict the foundation of the new Avengers team based solely on characters who are still presumed active in the main timeline and who have, at some point, appeared as official Avengers or been more recently recruited.
That means the biggest individual characters in the MCU – Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk – will all return. Marvel does have an in-built loophole of the Avengers not strictly being active to leave some veterans out, but it’s unlikely they’d stay on the sidelines. That’s the curse of superheroism in the MCU: it’s not optional.
The biggest casting question for this group is who will play Wasp, after Evangeline Lily announced her retirement from acting. With no Ant-Man project between now and Avengers 5‘s release, it would be unlikely for her to be written out, so the project will need to recast her.

Assuming none are killed off, they will logically return. And as for potential new recruits, the MCU has a backbench of heroes:

The Young Avengers
Ms Marvel’s New Hero Team Could Form Before 2026
Close
The Marvels‘ post-credits sceneset up the MCU’s Young Avengers team, after years of speculation that they’d be introduced to appeal to younger Marvel fans. Right now, we don’t know the exact line-up, but Kamala Khan has established herself as the team’s answer to Nick Fury, Kate Bishop is the first recruit, and Cassie Lang was notably name-checked.
Beyond them, Ironheart makes sense, Hulk’s son Skaar is a reasonable bet, and America Chavez would be a very powerful addition, considering her training under Wong. And while he’s not a superpowered individual, Eli Bradley’s previous appearance in Falcon & The Winter Soldier could lead to a call-up.
The team has not yet been properly formed or debuted as a going concern, but The Marvels’ set-up suggests there’s a good chance we’ll see them before 2026.

The Thunderbolts
Marvel’s Next Superhero Team Has A Darker Edge
The next MCU team to hit screens will be the shady government-sponsored Thunderbolts team in 2025’s Thunderbolts*. They’re all reformed criminals (to various degrees), so quite how invested they’d all be in fighting on the side of good remains to be seen. But with Yelena’s past with the original Black Widow and Bucky’s influence, whoever survives their suicide mission in the debut solo movie should return.
At the minute, the question of who dies in Thunderbolts* is worryingly pressing: rumor has it the earliest drafts included the team being sent to their deaths. That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re actually going to die, but suicide missions do tend to have a habit of being realized.

The New Guardians Of The Galaxy
Rocket Raccoon’s New Band Of Misfits Should Return
Given that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3‘s ending establishes a new Guardians team under Rocket’s leadership, it seems highly unlikely we won’t see the new team doing some actual guarding of the galaxy. This iteration of the Guardians is actually significantly more powerful than the originals, but they’re far less experienced, with two children in their ranks (if you include Adam Warlock).

Old Guardians Of The Galaxy Characters Likely To Return
Which Retired Guardians Could Come Back Into The Fold?
Close
The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 post-credits stinger promised that “the legendary Star-Lord will return”, and now that he’s on Earth, a team-up with the Avengers makes sense. Meanwhile, Nebula set herself up as the ruler of Knowhere, giving her an obligation as protector. Mantis, on the other hand, went off to find herself, but she wouldn’t turn her back on her family in a crisis.
Howard the Duck is more of a wildcard, but we know he turned up for the final battle in Avengers: Endgame, so he has both spirit and responsibility, and honestly, who wouldn’t want to see him join the fight again?
It’s pretty simple to rule out Dave Bautista’s Drax, based on the actor’s comments, while the same goes for Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, after she too confirmed she was done with the character. Both could probably be enticed back, but they’re also both easily written out. For now, they stay on the discard pile.

MCU Villains Who Could Return
Bad Guys Have A Universe To Save Too
Close
A multiversal threat – even if it isn’t the Council of Kangs – that threatened all existence could do something no previous MCU crossover has really managed: calling villains up to fight alongside the heroes. After all, they can’t fight over dominion of a world that doesn’t exist any more. There are some particularly intriguing options here, including Loki, who currently sits at the heart of the multiverse, and Harrison Ford’s yet-to-debut Red Hulk.
Kang himself still hasn’t been confirmed as returning, and the title change back to Avengers 5 (even if temporary) is hardly confidence-building in that respect. Recasting Kang would not be as complex as some may believe, though, and Comic Con 2024 may see the answer. It would be a shame to walk back his involvement, but Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania presented Marvel with a problem that lessening his role might just fix.
There is also a slight chance Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova reappears after Deadpool & Wolverine, but given she seems to be trapped in the Void, for now, let’s assume she stays there with whatever remains of her army of lost souls.

Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch is undoubtedly the most contentious inclusion here, because of her apparent death in Doctor Strange 2, but we never saw a body. By the rules of superhero clichés, that means she could very easily return, and it’s one of those persistent rumors that feels genuinely likely. Even if the mainline Wanda doesn’t return, Multiverse of Madness established that variants exist, and each of them would be under threat.
The Midnight Sons
Rumors Of A Supernatural MCU Team-Up Won’t Go Away
Rumors have long suggested that the MCU will form a Midnight Sons team to deal with more supernatural threats to the timeline. Even without that project being confirmed, the most likely candidates to join that team are still active in the MCU in some form, and are logical bets to reappear in Avengers 5.

Magical Characters
Sorcerors And Witches Assemble

Arguably the most powerful group of characters in the entire MCU, the sorcerors and witches could be key to turning the tide against whichever threats emerge in Avengers 5. Alongside Doctor Strange (and possibly Scarlet Witch), Wong feels inevitable, Clea (Charlize Theron) is currently with Doctor Strange, and Agatha would be a very interesting outside chance.

Mutants
The Age Of Mutants Is Coming And It Could Start With Avengers 5
Close
Even without the upcoming X-Men reboot landing before Avengers 5, there are active mutants who could join the multiversal war. Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool tenure in the MCU surely won’t end after one movie, and unless Deadpool & Wolverine kills off High Jackman’s beloved Logan (again), he should also return. Not least for Bob Iger’s promise to heavily lean on familiar character brands.
Then there’s Namor, played by Tenoch Huerta, whose further involvement is complicated by accusations against him in summer 2023 that he denied. And The Marvels‘ ending, of course, sent Monica Rambeau to a new universe where she met a variant of her mother, Maria, code-named Binary (Lashana Lynch) and Kelsey Grammer’s Beast. That could mean any number of other Fox X-Men actors returning, but we at the very least got a name-check for Professor Charles Xavier.
With Avengers 5′s story presumably tying up the incursions arc, this alternate universe – which was already crashing into the main MCU universe – coming back into play makes sense. Particularly because Monica needs to find her way home.

Upcoming MCU Debutants
Marvel’s First Family Should Join The Fray
Alongside the Avengers and the multiple other superhero teams who could (and probably will) play a part in Avengers 5, you can’t rule out the appearance of the new Fantastic Four. 2025 will see their MCU debut, and it’s assumed that they will come to the mainline universe after their own is destroyed. That would wrap them up in the multiverse’s incursion arc, and make an appearance in Avengers 5 quite likely.

The TVA
Loki’s Timeline Defenders Still Have A Big Job To Do
Deadpool & Wolverine will seemingly introduce an entirely new TVA led by Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr Paradox, but that doesn’t make the original TVA’s cast of characters any less important. Last we saw them in Loki season 2’s ending, the TVA was tracking Kang’s variants, which means their part in Avengers 5 is assured as long as it continues to center Kang.
Those plans may change, but Owen Wilson’s Mobius remains at the frontline of multiversal defense, so it’s impossible to rule out his return. If he reappears, so too will his colleagues, and the re-emergence of Kang or a threat to Loki would surely also guarantee Sophia Di Martino returns as Sylvie.

Other Heroes & Supporting Characters
It’s Not All About The Big Name Heroes
Close
Every Avengers movie so far may have forefronted the heroes themselves, but the supporting casts have still played significant parts in the stories. Coby Smulders’ Maria Hill and Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson were key to The Avengers‘ plot, as well as Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster and Stellan Skarsgård’s Dr Erik Selvig. Only one remains alive, and Selvig is the Earth’s leading human multiverse expert, so should be considered a logical addition to Avengers 5.
For the rest of the suggested supporting cast, it’s a matter of choosing the characters whose absence would need to be explained smartly. If Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) have retired to a happy ending, they’re still Scott Lang’s in-laws, and the likes of Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Punisher (Jon Bernthal) surely wouldn’t sit back and ignore a global threat simply because they’re street-level heroes.
Nick Fury would break the longest appearance streak in the MCU if he sat this one out, and it feels inevitable that Wakanda will be involved as one of the single most powerful nations on Earth. That brings a whole host of named characters into play.

The Wildcards
Which MCU Characters Would Be Most Unexpected?
The following characters are by no means a lock for Avengers 5, but they are either active in the MCU or have teased further stories in the case of one specific example. If they all appear, the cast of named Avengers 5 characters would actually rise well above 100.
The Eternals
So far, the Eternals have not reappeared in the MCU since their solo movie, but Eternals ending set up a continuing story that must be resolved at some point. There’s also the small matter of Harry Styles’ Eros, a cameo so starry that leaving him as a bit of fan-bait in the Eternals post-credits scene (along with Patton Oswalt’s Pip the Troll) would be illogical.
The Celestials-created superheroes were previously bound by a policy of non-interference, but their hand in stopping the Emergence of Earth’s Celestial broke that rule. And now that they’ve done it once, it wouldn’t make sense for them to sit by idly as Earth faced another catastrophe.
Eros, Pip, Sersi (Gemma Chan), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Thena (Angelina Jolie), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Druig (Barry Keoghan) and Sprite (Lia McHugh) could all return to the MCU, though Sprite has lost her powers.
Thanos
Even though two live-action versions of the Mad Titan are dead, Josh Brolin spoke in early 2024 about the possibility of Thanos returning to the MCU. Given the multiverse story of Avengers 5 and Secret Wars, there’s a strong chance a version of him returns for one of the crossovers.
“You know, I hear kind of like through the grapevine, that they’re gonna bring him back. And there’s the What If…? series and that’s a different kind of Thanos and all that. But I don’t know in the Marvel world whether they’re going to bring him back, but I didn’t know that he was the most killed-off Marvel villain… You learn something new every day.”
Sonya Falsworth & G’iah
While not many people MCU actually watched Secret Invasion‘s ending (or any of it, really), it did set up the enticing prospect of a British superhero project overseen by Olivia Colman’s Sonya Falsworth and led by Emilia Clarke’s improbably powerful Skrull G’iah. There’s every possibility that ends up on the Marvel scrap heap, but equally, both could be brought back as part of Earth’s mightiest defenders in Avengers 5. I wouldn’t necessarily bank on it, but they’re out there somewhere.
The Silver Surfer & Galactus
Custom image by Simon Gallagher
They won’t debut until Fantastic Four‘s release in 2025, but Julia Garner’s Shalla-Bal and Ralph Ineson’s Galactus could both return for Avengers 5. The former is probably more likely, since Fantastic Four appears to be set in an alternate 1960’s retro-futuristc timeline that Marvel’s First Family escape from. Presumably Galactus will be the reason, and superheroes don’t have a habit of bringing their villains with them. Especially when they like to eat worlds.
Echo
Echo‘s status as the first Marvel Spotlight project makes her potential to crossover with the mainline MCU a little unclear at this stage, but she’s certainly a possibility. Alaqua Cox’s Echo was more of an anti-villain, but the ending of her show suggests she has ascended to become protector of her community. And that would make any catastrophic threat to it a big enough concern for her to join the fight.
Man-Thing & Elsa Bloodstone
If Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal) returns as part of a potential Midnight Sons line-up (or even just as a surprise solo hero), his two allies from Werewolf By Night would be logical supporting characters. Both are usefully powerful, and seeing Man-Thing line-up alongside Hulk in battle is particularly fun. And at Disney’s 2022 D23 Expo, Kevin Feige did tease that Werewolf By Night “will become quite important to the future of the MCU.”
Agatha’s Coven
If Agatha All Along doesn’t kill off all the characters and Katheryn Hahn’s witch has a sudden attack of conscience when she realizes that she being the Earth’s most powerful magical being is pointless if it’s destoryed in a multiversal war, she and her new coven could well step up in Avengers 5. That would mean possible returns for Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal, Joe Locke’s rumored Wiccan (who could become a Young Avenger), and the other Agatha All Along cast members.
The Masters of the Mystic Arts
Wong’s somewhat inevitable return to the fold in Avengers 5 (he was, after all, actively recruiting heroes in Shang-Chi) likely means the surviving Masters of the Mystic Arts from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will follow suit. Of that group, we know Rintrah the minotaur sorceror survived Wanda’s attack, and Multiverse of Madness‘ ending shows a significant number of Masters and Apprentices still practicing magic in Kamar-Taj who could form a valuable part of Earth’s army.
Will Avengers 5 Introduce More Variants?
The Multiverse’s Biggest Selling Point Is Big Name Returns
At this stage, it’s not appropriate to count them officially, but there is a good chance Marvel will use the multiverse concept to bring back some familiar variants. Tony Stark’s Iron Man, Steve Rogers, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men, and What If…? characters Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell) and Kahhori (Devery Jacobs) could all play parts. Frankly, I would expect some or all of them to be held back for Secret Wars, but don’t discount some starry post-credits cameos in Avengers 5.
