We are excited to share insights from the "Water as Leverage Innovation Lab: Catalyzing Urban Water Resilience for Global Impact," held during the 10th World Water Forum in Bali on 22 May! šŸŒWhy was this Innovation Lab so important?1.Water as Leverage is a growing global partnership, comprising old and new partners. In this Innovation Lab we united and shared the experiences of their WaL journeys. This ranges from exploring (Indonesia), started (Nakuru, Kenia) towards replicating and upscaling (Chennai, India). We bring together learnings, questions and stories. 2.WaL has introduced eight principles as essential to inspire and rethink urban water climate resilience, applying to all the steps in the planning phase. In the Innovation Lab we inspired and enriched this thinking to generate catalytic change turning water from a challenge into an opportunity. Today, we combined diverse perspectives, insights, and urban initiatives into a comprehensive Water as Leverage framework, providing actionable principles and steps to enhance urban water resilience, through inclusion, integrality, finance, and nature-based solutions..We were honored to have contributions from distinguished panellists, including representatives from Chennai in India, Nakuru City in Kenya, Bangkok in Thailand, Bappenas (Indonesian Ministry of National Development Planning), the International Panel of Deltas and Coasts, the OECD and the Asian Development Bank.During a dynamic working session, participants engaged to explore the meaning of the Water as Leverage principles, identified gaps, and discussed how the methodology can be applied to other cities and contexts. This collaborative effort ensured the framework's adaptability and effectiveness across diverse urban environments.Key highlights included:šŸ’” Leveraging the expertise of local champions, global networks, and top researchers.šŸŒ± New insights on how to use the WaL Principles for pathways towards sustainable urban resilience.šŸŒ Strengthening connections and networks among urban water professionals, local authorities, policymakers, researchers, NGOs, and other stakeholders.Deltares Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) | Partner in Sustainable Development OECD - OCDE Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas Republic of Indonesia IPDC Asian Development Bank (ADB) Meike van Ginneken Stephanie Janssen Sandra Schoof Robert Proos Eva Pfannes Sylvain Hartenberg Gitau Thabanja Ewin S Winata Josien Grashof Xavier Leflaive Alexander Nash Dr Somkiat Prajamwong Sander Carpay Dennis van Peppen Ivo van der Linden Monica Velasco B. We are excited to present an update on the ā€˜Water as Leverage Nakuru for a Resilient Sponge Cityā€™ programme. The second local workshop was arranged on March 26 in collaboration with the County administration of Nakuru and our strategic local partner, VEI Dutch Water Operators. This workshop was a follow-up to the first event that took place in Nakuru in January of this year; and aimed to present and discuss the draft findings of the ā€œSetting the Scene WaL Nakuru for a resilient sponge cityā€. The workshop session was formally launched by the facilitator, Mr. Anthony Mwangi, who also acknowledged the attendance of the city manager, Mr. Gitau Thabanja, and the managing director of Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services, Mr. Eng. Gachanthi. With curiosity and enthusiasm, the stakeholders took part in the plenary talks and interactive working sessions facilitated by Rebel East Africa and Defacto Urbanism. About forty people from the public and private sector, academia, and non-governmental organizations worked to retrofit the identification of Nakuru's hot-spots and exchanged information about financial incentives and governance involvement in these areas.Important meetings were also organized with the City Manager, the County, and National Government, and relevant chief representatives in the sectors of water, sanitation, civil engagement, and disaster risks, to discuss the next steps of the WaL Nakuru programme. Since WaL fosters and aims for an inclusive process, visits to the local communities of the Hotspots were also organized with productive conversations and obtained additional necessary information. A final Setting the Scene report will be produced after processing and presenting all of these inputs.More to come! šŸŒŠāœØ Today, on World Water Day 2024, we reflect on the vital role water plays not just in sustaining life but also in fostering peace and resilience in our communities. This year's World Water Day theme, 'Leveraging Water for Peace,' underscores the profound impact that access to clean water and sustainable water management can have on conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts worldwide. In the face of escalating climate challenges, it's imperative that we recognize water as not only a precious resource but also a powerful tool for cooperation and collaboration. From mitigating conflicts over water scarcity to promoting dialogue and understanding among diverse stakeholders, the potential for water to unite us is boundless.Weā€™re thrilled to share a new video from ā€œWater as Leverage Cartagena ā€“ Construyendo con el Aguaā€ that beautifully illustrates the importance of working hand in hand with communities on water and climate change adaptation in cities. By harnessing the collective wisdom and ingenuity of local residents, governments, and organisations, we can create innovative solutions that address both the immediate and long-term water challenges facing our urban centres.Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/eAw47eWM As we commemorate World Water Day, let's renew our commitment to leveraging water as a catalyst for peace, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
