Stefano Pescosoiido 6-4. BALTIMORE (AP) Champagneforashley might not star in his first performance on the national stage, but his trainer Is confident he won't hear catcalls. "I know as he goes on he'll be as good as these horses," trainer Howie Tesher said about his colt, who makes his Triple Crown series debut in Saturday's Preakness. "It might not be Saturday, but he won't be embarrassed. If he had run in the Derby, he would have been embarrassed." Cast in the starring role, though, is Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled, who arrived Wedneday at Pimlico.

Others in the expected cast of 1 1 3-year-olds include four other Derby veterans runner-up Summer Squall, Pleasant Tap (third), Land Rush (seventh) and Mister Frisky (eighth). Champagneforashley appeared headed for the Derby despite suffering his first loss in a six-race career in the 1 8-mile Wood Memorial on April 21. The colt finished a good third, beaten only a length by the winner, Thirty Six Red. "We just couldn't get him the way we wanted him," Tesher said. In explaining the decision to keep the colt out of the Derby, Tesher said Champagneforashley had not responded well to a seven-furlong prep for the Wood and that the Wood had taken too much out of the colt.

Champagneforashley had contracted colic and lost weight after his victory in the Tampa Bay Derby on March 18. "The best he ever came into a race was the Nashua," Tesher said. Champagneforashley closed out his three-race campaign as a 2-year-old with a nine-length victory in the 1 l-16th-mile Nashua on Dec. 9 at Aqueduct. "This is as close as I've had him to what I want since the Nashua." Tesher said he had trouble finding a spot for the colt to run in Florida during the winter and that it had come down to starting him either in the seven-furlong Swale at Gulf-stream Park on March 17 or the Tampa Bay Derby.

Tesher called Tampa Bay Downs "really, really deep. Nobody wins over it the first time." Champagneforasheley did, but it was a harrowing experience for Tesher. "He did everything wrong," Tesher recalled. The trainer had difficulty saddling the colt, who then unseated jockey Jacinto Vasquez in the post parade. Champagneforashley has minded his manners in his two starts since the Tampa Bay Derby.

Tesher put the colt through a strong two-mile gallop Wednesday. Before the gallop, he was refitted with a right front shoe. 1 .01 1 -874: a-Susan George def. a-Deb- rice Richard. None.
