The Indian River showcases flora and fauna that are specific only to that area of Dominica. There are two main local folk dances, which celebrates the cultural roots of the Garifuna people, who are native to the island of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and which form part of Mayreau’s cultural roots. These dances are known as the Cake Dance and the May Pole.

These dances are performed as a form of ritualistic entertainment at traditional social gatherings especially around Easter Celebrations and Fisherman’s Day which takes place between April and May. They illustrate the rich Grenadines Sea fearing culture, tell of the islands’ foundational stories and expresses cultural pride through dance.

You will enjoy a dance lesson, where you will be actively encouraged to participate in repeating the dance moves. Then, you will be graced with the presence of three professional dancers clad in traditional attire while dancing to the rhythm of local drums.

The Indian River gushes down the Morne aux Diables Mountain range and gently meanders down to the lowlands of Portsmouth, where it flows gracefully into the Caribbean Sea. The Indian River showcases flora and fauna that are specific only to that area of Dominica.
